Volunteering Case Study

"Hi, it's Tina  here and I've been at Preston Lodge HS for 5 years. I really enjoy sport. I started playing hockey for the school, then East Lothian and then PL Ladies. I also play rugby for East Lothian. I took part in an outdoor pursuits course with Angie at the Pennypit and other people in my year. We did several different sports then Angie asked me to help volunteer with sports coaching. I have now started working in the Pennypit's community youth programmes every Friday. I am also doing a biking programme."

Tina has also coached at the Pennypit's holiday programmes, creating fun coaching sessions for the children. Tina has also helped in cooking lessons at the local primary school. Tina communicates well, is very reliable and all of the children always want to be in her team at the holiday clubs. The sport volunteering project has provided a pathway for Tina to develop and make the difficult move from participant to employee. She has grown in confidence and is able to take on jobs with responsibility. Tina will shortly receive a Saltire Award for over 250 hours of volunteering. The Pennypit will continue to support and help Tina as she finished school and makes plans for the future.

"Tina has done fantastic in all of her roles at the Pennypit Trust. She has natural enthusiasm and a can do attitude. Tina works very hard and is always on time. She has great rapport with the children. We are delighted with her development as a coach and will continue to support her." Angela Davie - Sport & Community Development Manager, Pennypit Trust
